Entropy is the measure of disorder. A built structure has a certain amount of order, or, a certain amount of entropy. When the building is demolished, the order becomes a mess. The material content of the building and its mass are still the same, but the matter now takes a different form. The system becomes more entropic.

The second law of thermodynamics states that entropy always increases – even though the fundamental laws of nature are symmetrical. A system that is in equilibrium has no flow of information – only by adding interference does the system become active, or entropic. While you see the process of the building collapsing, it is extremely unlikely that you will ever see the process of the building spontaneously coming back together.

That is exactly what our intention is: to break the second law of thermodynamics.

Imagine a film of a building being imploded. A pair of film projectors are placed on a pendulum, projecting an image of the building, which remains motionless as long as the pendulum is motionless. A swinging pendulum is still a symmetrical, non-chaotic system, but the projected system becomes chaotic. As the pendulum swings in one direction the film is activated, and the building collapses. As the pendulum swings back the building comes back together, and the system goes on moving back and forth in time.

An event which is asymmetrical in time due to the second law of thermodynamics – like the demolition of a building – is rendered symmetrical by the non-chaotic system, in this case the pendulum. The film projector continuously projects this moment of entropy. This prototype is the first attempt towards an installation which will be produced in full next year on a larger scale: a Foucault pendulum that will project a movie whose speed, in both time and space, depends on the rotation of the planet.
